If someone tells me that I've hurt their feelings, I say, 'I'm still waiting to hear what your point is." I particularly enjoyed Franzen's rants on literary interviews, then grammar (read it to get the in joke). Whatever the topic Franzen writes with enjoyable fluid prose that prevented me from putting the book down (OK figure of speech, closing the kindle on my laptop) I used to feel bad for Franzen because he was forever going to be known as DFW's less-talented friend but now I think I feel bad because he's so obsessed with birds??

He ends his piece on Munro with a plea for the transforming power of literature: “Can a better kind of fiction save the world? There’s always some tiny hope (strange things do happen), but the answer is almost certainly no, it can’t. There is some reasonable chance, however, that it could save your soul.” But on the whole the book was interesting and informative, and where it fell short (James Cook discovered the cure for scurvy - um, not exactly...) I did a bit of internet research and filled in some gaps. At the end of the book I felt like there were still questions in my mind about how I should feel about Cook, but at least now I know more about where he came from and what a remarkable life he led. If I have a chance to read more analysis on his place in history and where he went wrong near the end ("almost as if Cook were suffering from dementia..."?) I probably will. FArTHER is the story of a father who dreams of flying. However, when he goes to war and does not return, his son attempts to finish where he left off and makes his dream come true. Winner of the 2012 Greenaway award, this truly is an inspirational story showing how any dream can be fulfilled with love and motivation.This is a picture book for children of ages 8 and upwards. Although it doesn’t contain a lot of text, the words are beautifully woven into the pictures using different fonts and text sizes. The pictures themselves are intricate and detailed images put together in a unique way using photographs and illustration which in themselves tell a story. January is Oceania. What I remember about explorers is nearly 50 years in my past. What I remember about James Cook is he was a sailor and discovered NZ, Hawaii and looked for the Northwest Passage.

He hits the nail on the head again in "What Makes You So Sure You're Not the Evil One?" Instead of simply listing why Alice Munro is a fantastic writer, he chooses to suggest why the Canadian author isn't a household name. He also brilliantly describes why short stories -- Munro's bread and butter -- shouldn't be dismissed by the general reading public. This is somewhat shallow history, and a straightforward story. As far as I can tell Dugard simply makes things up when he discusses Cook's inner thoughts and motivations.

Teaching about the latest events?

The first thing I will comment on are the illustrations. They are incredible. Using photographic collage and illustration, this is the first book that Grahame has both written and illustrated and the results are amazing. The illustrations really do bring this picture book to life and the size of the book make it perfect for reading to groups of children.
